As a fan of Paul Theroux, I had high hopes his latest novel. Overall, the writing is as fine as ever, but I grew bored with the main character, a legendary but aging Hawaiian surfer named Joe Sharkey. This novel offers an admiring, detailed and intimate biography of Sharkey, who has spent his entire adult life doing basically nothing except surf. I found myself thinking, as I read about Sharkey's various low rent adventures and personal crises, that this book reminded me of Jack Kerouac's "On the Road," but without the dynamic (and essential) character of Dean Moriarty. What the reader can learn from the character of Sharkey is unclear to me, and I feel that Theroux's immense talents are wasted in this book. I'm not interested in surfing, and I've recently had my fill of narcissism, so Paul Theroux's Joe Sharkey didn't resonate with me much at all. He's a narcissistic aging surfer who fills the pages of this book with ruminations about fame and mortality. The problem is, I didn't care because I found Sharkey self-absorbed and obnoxious. I finished the book, and read every page, but didn't get much pleasure from it. Some of the writing is good, some of the descriptions are excellent, and some of the other characters are well-drawn and interesting. But Sharkey's character, particularly his interior monologues, needed serious editing to avoid taking on the characteristics of a blowhard who comes to visit and never leaves. I believe I have read -- and reread-- all of Theroux's books. This was one of my least favorites.
